Science Beyond The Lab: Communicating Science - 11 February 2017

The next Saturday 11th of February in MuntPunt, CEBE (Spanish Scientists in Belgium) is organizing a round table where professionals of different areas of science communications will talk about their job and their personal experience.

The attendees will have the chance to interact with the speakers and ask them questions about their career.

We will host a medical writer, a science youtuber, graphical designers and a communications officer of a science museum consortium. If you want to know more about the speakers or our organization, read below.

Location: MuntPunt (Literair salon),  Place de la Monnaie 6, 1000 Brussels.

The event will be held in English.

– Daniel Pérez: He does a PhD in Physics at KULeuven and his major hobby is science communication. He popularizes science by using a blog, a YouTube channel, Twitter and Facebook. He also does stand up scientific comedy and was the first Audience Award winner of FameLab Belgium 2015.


– Idoya Lahortiga: She did her PhD at the University of Pamplona (Spain) and she worked in the characterization of genes involved in Acute Myeloid Leukemia. From there, she went to work as a PostDoc in Leuven. In February 2011, she co-founded Somersault18:24, a company specialized in production of scientific illustrations and animations for the research scientist.

– Luk Cox: He did his PhD at the KU Leuven studying heart and blood vessel development. followed by a PostDoc in working on mouse models for leukaemia research. In February 2011, he co-founded Somersault18:24, a company specialized in production of scientific illustrations and animations for the research scientist.

– Sara E. Rubio: After a PhD in Biomedicine (University of Barcelona) and a postdoctoral position studying brain synapses at VIB and KU Leuven, Sara decided to steer her career towards Medical Communications. She did an internship in the Publications department of a medical communications agency in Cambridge (UK) and just came back to Belgium very recently as a Scientific/Medical Writer at XPE Pharma & Science.

– Raquel da Cunha: She has worked on pharmaceutical companies as Janssen, and she started a PhD in KULeuven about Parkinson’s disease. But after a few years she left the lab to follow her dream: communicating science. She works now as an Events and Communications Officer & Project Manager at Ecsite, the European network of science centers and museums .
