Science Beyond The Lab: Industry - 8 December 2018

08 December 2018 ·

Next Saturday 8th December, CEBE is organising a colloquium where three persons working in industry, for companies focused on different scientific fields, will talk about their roles and experiences, and how they transitioned from the lab to their current positions.

Following the colloquium, we will open a discussion time when the public will have the chance to ask the speakers more in detail about their experience, day to day work, their concerns, or any other related question.

The event will take place in the The Sister Brussels Café (Rue Chair et Pain 3, 1000 Brussels) at 15h, and it will be in English.

Entrance is free but registration is needed. Link to EventBrite

About the speakers

Marta Rubio-Txeira did her PhD in genetic engineering of baker’s yeast for industrial purposes (IATA/CSIC, Valencia). After her PhD she did three post-doctoral stays in USA: two years in Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, followed by four years in MIT Biology Department and almost two years in Whitehead Institute/MIT. After this, she moved to Belgium where she worked for almost eight years at KUL Molecular Microbiology Department. From her thesis up to her last academic position she worked in the regulation of nutrient signalling pathways in yeast, and effects of a human tumor gene and neurodegenerative proteins to better understand the underlying mechanisms of disease. After academia she had a first short stay in the AB-Inbev beer company and afterward she started working in Ablynx, a company developing camelid antibodies (Nanobodies) for immunotherapies. There she currently works as Molecular Engineering Senior Scientist- Team leader.

Rubén del Pozo Sacristán completed his academic formation at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of León (Spain), where he obtained his DVM diploma in 2007. Immediately after graduation and for two years, he worked as swine practitioner in a pig farming integration, Progatecsa, in Spain. From October 2009 onwards, he followed an internship and a residency program for the European College of Porcine Health Management (ECPHM) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University under the supervision of Prof. Dominiek Maes. His interest in research led him to defend a PhD project entitled “Treatment and control of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections” in 2014. In 2015 he became European diplomate ECPHM by examination. Since 2014 he is part of the technical team within MSD Animal Health Belgium as Farm consultant.

Lucian Hotoiu did his PhD in 2013 in the field of computational electrochemistry, in the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). In particular, he studied the simulation of nano-second pulse electrochemical micro-machining. These kind of simulations offer prediction and insight on the process behaviour, contributing in production of micro-components for computer, aviation, automotive and medical industry. After this, in 2014 he started working as research engineer in the ImagX Research Group, which is a joint project between UCL (Université catholique de Louvain) and the company IBA, world leader in proton therapy. This research environment provided Lucian a smooth connection between academic and industrial research, from where he jumped to work for IBA from 2015.
