Your research in one image or 1000 words

CEBE SciComm aims to increase awareness, enjoyment, interest, critical opinion-forming and understanding of science. SciComm requires the use of creative, vibrant and self-explanatory language and/or images that facilitate the understanding as well as trigger the interest in scientific knowledge. For this reason, CEBE opens the call “Your science in one image or 1000 words”, where researchers and/or science communicators will explain a scientific concept either in a text (1000 words) or a self-explanatory image.

The key points you need to remember:
- Each participant can only send one piece of work to the contest, either a text or an image
- Deadline: May 15th, 2020 at 8:00 p.m
- There are two different selection procedures (jury and general public), you can choose if you want to participate in both or in only one of them
- PRIZES per category (i.e. text or image)
Awarded by the Jury: FIRST PRIZE 250€, SECOND PRIZE 150 €
Awarded by the Public: FIRST PRIZE 100€
- Three documents need to be sent to comunicacion.cientifica@cebebelgica.es
i) APPENDIX A duly completed with personal data and a signed declaration of responsibility in which the author ensures that the text/artwork presented is original or unpublished as well as accepts the rules of the contest in its entirety
ii) a scanned copy of the identity document of the country corresponding to their nationality
iii) the text or artwork in the digital format submitted to the competition that meets the specified conditions in the rules and regulations (see sections IV (for the text) and V (for the image).
TEXT: Digital format (Word or PDF). 1000 words (being 900 words the minimum and 1100 words the maximum). The word count (not including the title) should be included as the last line of the document. The language of this document should be English.
IMAGE: The image will be presented in digital format (.jpg, .png, .tiff or .svg). The image must have a minimum resolution of 72ppp in the RGB color scheme and should be designed in a horizontal 3 position with a maximum size of 1200px (length) by 1200px (width). Any technique, manual and/or digital, can be used to carry it out. If the image contains any words, they should be in English.

Sergi Farré is the cultural and scientific diplomatic counselor of the Embassy of Spain in Belgium since August 2017. He has worked for the Spanish foreign service for almost 20 years, with extensive experience in cultural and science diplomacy. His previous assignments include the following posts: Diplomatic Advisor and Spokesperson at the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (Barcelona, Spain); Deputy-Director General for University and Scientific Cooperation at AECID (Madrid, Spain), Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Spain in Ljubljana, Slovenia; Cultural and Scientific Counselor at the Embassy of Spain in Bolivia and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Spain in Khartoum, Sudan. Ana Vázquez Barrado is the Executive Director at Instituto Cervantes of Brussels and the General Coordinator of Instituto Cervantes in BENELUX. Previously she was the Cultural Director of the Cervantes Institute in Rome, Rabat and New York. She holds a PhD in Art History and, a European Master in Cultural and Natural Heritage Diffusion, a Master in Management of Cultural and Public Organizations and a Master in Translation (Italian). Her passion is to contribute to the dissemination of all knowledge creatively and innovatively. When she was a child, she used to sneak out of bed at night to watch all the scientific programs on TV.

Toon Verlinden y Hans Van de Water set up the company The Floor is Yours in 2012. Because 'life is too short for bad presentations', right? They have since trained thousands of researchers in the techniques necessary to prepare and give effective presentations.
In addition to being an international presentation coach and an expert in scientific communication, Toon Verlinden is a freelance scientific and travel journalist. He is also the organizer of the Sound of Science festival.

Liesbeth Aerts is a science communicator at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research. She is one of the driving forces behind ‘Infopunt Proefdieronderzoek’ (an initiative that aims to bring nuanced information about laboratory animal research to the general public) and the Belgian SciComm network.
Originally trained as a molecular neuroscientist, Liesbeth is on a mission to make sure scientific research is valued for its extraordinary impact on society.

Cirenia Arias is scientist and freelance illustrator based in Oxford, UK. She helps organizations and other scientists to communicate their work using the power of images, keeping the rigour science demands, through videos, graphics, sketches, posters and animations. Her passion for science communication comes from her willingness to help people understand complex ideas. She also loves trying to motivate other researchers to be as passionate about visual communication as she is.
